Most states require motorcycle insurance. Oklahoma is one of those states. There are different types of motorcycle insurance coverage in the market. However, motorcycle owners are required to have at least motorcycle liability insurance to drive legally.
Motorcycle Liability Insurance
Motorcycle liability insurance covers damages caused by the insured’s motorcycle. This coverage will allow minimal amounts of insurance for a person's injury or death, property damage, and coverage for death or injury for at least two individuals.
In the state of Oklahoma, motorists under the age of 18 must wear helmets. Other regulations regarding motorcycle insurance include the following:
- Motorcyclists can obtain a three-year insurance discount upon participating in the Oklahoma Rider Education Program, but this excludes court-mandated participants.
- Motorcyclists must carry proof of insurance even though law officials can monitor insurance statuses on an online verification system.
- Proof of insurance can be a surety bond, a certificate of deposit, a certificate of self-insurance, an insurance ID card from the provider, or proof of participating in the state’s Assigned Risk Auto Plan.
Penalties for Having no Motorcycle Insurance
If motorists are caught with no proof of insurance, they can face various penalties. They may receive up to a $250 fine. They may obtain license and registration suspension, or they may receive up to 30 days in jail.
Other Types of Motorcycle Insurance Coverage
As mentioned before, liability insurance is the minimum coverage that is required by law. However, you can obtain more protection with additional motorcycle insurance coverage.
For instance, full coverage usually includes uninsured/underinsured coverage, bodily injury liability coverage, collision, comprehensive, property coverage, and medical payments coverage for the insured’s motorcycle. The main three coverages of motorcycle insurance are bodily injury liability insurance, collision insurance, and comprehensive physical damage insurance. Other coverage for the insured’s bike is accessory coverage and motorcycle roadside.
Motorists can also get personal injury protection (PIP). This coverage is also referred to as ‘no-fault insurance.
